HIV/Aids Awareness Day
In partnership with the Houston Area Urban League
Young Professionals, The brothers distributed pamphlets on sexually transmitted diseases and safe sex kits through the South Park /Third Ward
communities, which have the highest HIV rate in Texas. According to the Center for Disease Control, African Americans account for almost half (49%) of new HIV cases in the United States, even though we only make up 13% of the population. This disease is an epidemic in our community, and the Brothers of Rho Nu are
committed to fighting the spread of this disease through education. Students from Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern University also
participated in this initiative.
Christin Lee wins rho Nu's talent hunt
Galveston, TX (PN) -
On February 8, 2008 Rho Nu held a Talent Hunt at Wesley Tabernacle United Methodist Church. Two very talented high school students, Christin Lee and Robert Bryan showcased their talents to an enthusiastic crowd. Ms. Lee won first place by singing a very inspiring gospel song, and Mr. Bryan entertained the crowd with a sax
rendition of Bill Wither’s “Just the Two of Us”. Our first place winner received a Dell laptop and an expense paid trip to San Antonio to compete in the Talent Hunt Competition at the 71st Annual 9th District Meeting
The Talent Hunt program of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is one of several national programs designed to identify and support the youth of our nation and the world. The original idea was created by Brother J. Austin Atkins of Winston Salem, North Carolina, and Brother Dewey Duckett of Rock Hill, South Carolina. While the idea was conceived in 1945, the first District Talent Hunt program was held in the Sixth District in Charlotte, North Carolina, on April 19, 1946. The need for such a program was born out of the unequal opportunity afforded to some American youth to develop and give full expression to their talents.
71st Ninth District Meeting
The 71st Annual Ninth District meeting is rapidly approaching. The meeting will take place from March 19th - 23rd in San Antonio, Texas. The host hotel is the Crowne Plaza-Riverwalk. The Houston Coalition set the bar high last year by hosting the largest district meeting to date, but Bro. John Cooper and Psi Alpha are definitely shaping this district up to be great!
